Brush Fire Erupts Near Wexner Medical Center, Prompting Evacuations

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Fire crews from across central Ohio responded Wednesday afternoon after a rapidly spreading brush fire ignited near The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, threatening nearby homes and forcing precautionary evacuations.

The fire, fueled by dry vegetation and gusty winds, quickly spread through a wooded area west of the medical campus. Thick smoke could be seen for miles, reducing visibility and prompting officials to close several nearby roadways as firefighters worked to establish containment lines.

As a precaution, portions of Wexner Medical Center activated emergency procedures. While the hospital remained operational, several non-critical patients were relocated within the facility, and emergency responders stood by in the event additional evacuations became necessary.

Residents in several nearby neighborhoods were ordered to evacuate as flames moved closer to homes. Firefighters worked aggressively to protect structures, using ground crews, ladder trucks, and aerial water drops where conditions allowed.
